"Lunch with the Future"

"Lunch with the Future" at John Muir High School was introduced in 2006. Students affiliated with MPYD assemble during their lunch period to listen to motivational speakers and to learn about areas that cover the spectrum, from requirements for college to expectation in the world of work. Representatives from local businesses and other professionals are scheduled to come spend lunchtime with participating students to discuss various occupations. Lunch time presenters become role models for some participating students.

"Lunch with the Future" has as its premise the notion that MYPD's students will one day be the future leaders in the Pasadena/Altadena community and in other communities of the nation. We invite today's leaders to interact with tomorrow's leaders. MPYD provides lunch for the young men as they listen and interact with speakers from all walks of life as they talk about life. Topics like careers, business, manhood, morals, ethics, relationships and healthy lifestyles are on our agenda. We provide a safe place for these young men to learn and ask about life's pleasures and challenges and get positive and practical answers from successful people in our community.

The goal of this program is to enable MPYD students to visualize and prepare for a future that provides productive employment and healthy lifestyles in family and community relationships. The objectives are: improved desire and ability to interact positively with teachers, parents, leaders, and peers; aspirations for productive employment in worthy jobs and careers; and noticeable development of need for setting achieveable goals and diligence in preparing to reach those goals.

Mentors and career persons meet with the young men to both present and converse with them concerning life, relationships, and future careers, with a view toward channeling their aspirations and expectations toward laudable pursuits.
